Layering

When I paired this fuchsia blouse over my gray shift dress, I suppose I'm trying to get more wear out of my clothing in as many different ways as possible. I'm hoping more experimentation with my current inventory (haha inventory!) will lead to less shopping.

The Shortest Day

I woke up at 5 AM, had my first meeting by 7, went to the requisite family dinner, and I was still going like an Energizer bunny at 9 PM, when I'm usually dead-tired on a Monday.

It was nothing short of amazing grace that sustained me yesterday. I felt so alive, inspired, and productive despite the crazy, crazy atmosphere at the office. Could it have been the 7 AM meeting that pumped adrenaline through my veins the entire day? Hahaha. And to think I really dreaded the insanely early meeting. Hmmm. I could be on to something here :)

Life's a Picnic

Okay, so I didn't really have a picnic, but this shirt kind of reminds me how I sometimes okay, most times forget to stress less and take a chill pill. The ease with which I put my outfit together was further reinforced by the Sunday message yesterday: taking control of one's worry.

Simple Luxury

I can't quite explain it, but this photo perfectly captures the essence of a bird about to take flight. He is tentative and unsure, yet full of faith and possibilities. Do you see it? :)

Hmmm. Maybe it's just the mood I've been in the past couple of weeks.

Stepping Closer to the Edge

Let's get it out in the open -- I look gaunt :( I can't help it; coughing and blowing one's nose takes up so many calories that my skinny jeans are *gasp* now loose. Blessedly, despite my body's knack for losing weight on its own, my mom still tries to fatten me up with tonight's dinner of mushroom pasta with truffle oil and steak. Mmmmm!

Moving on! :)

Inspiration

Given that I've been down with a nasty cold the past couple of days and have been hibernating at home, I have no outfit posts to show... so I'll share something that inspires me, keeps me alive, reminds me that there's more to life than Excel spreadsheets and Mancom presentations and financial stability.

As you can see, most of my books are on fashion and style. These were roughly accumulated this year and the year 2009. Funnily enough, I was in a weird place last year and the only book I bought was... tan-tan-tadaaaaan....

Style Profile: Rhaine

Let me introduce you to our office intern, Rhaine. Isn't she adorable?

She started working with us in August. Besides her charming smile, she has an infectiously cheerful attitude that makes me want to be more productive too!

What's green, yellow, and red, and honks all day?

Answer: ME!

I decided to psych myself up for the Christmas spirit given it's only a few more weeks away! Beginning with a black dress as my canvas, I layered a diaphanous green blouse and weighed it down with a yellow ornamental necklace. Owing to the cold I've had all weekend, my nose and the skin beneath it has chafed red... which goes with the holiday theme of the day ;p

I decided to have our scrap yard as my backdrop of the day... it's nice to change things up sometimes.

Shoe Story: Tough as Nails

A shoe is more than just a shoe. Admit it, shoe-holics out there :)

More than mere protection for the feet, my shoes each have a story to tell.

Some, I've purchased in celebration, some out of depression, rebellion, necessity, or just for fun. There are pairs that have been abused no end by unpaved parking lots, drenched in the rain, and taken off before the flood would wash them away. There are those that lost their heel tips* in the cobblestones and gardens of Ateneo. There are some I have traipsed miles in with friends because we were too cheap to take the bus. Then there are shoes that have gone on dates with me, heel height dependent on the guy's height and confidence ;p

And so, here begins a series chronicling some of my shoes, the memories I've had with them, and the adventures we've yet to seek together!

Remember these from a previous post?

Oh, Deer Me!

Please excuse the corny caption, but I initially thought I was wearing a cat-print until I took a closer look!

If you've noticed, I used my much-neglected SLR camera today instead of my usual iPhone, which explains why I took my own photos. I still need to either train someone to use the camera or figure out how to take remote-control photos, both of which I'm still mustering patience for.

This is the print in close-up:

I pair it with a white skirt from my college days -- proof I have not gained much (or any) weight since. I've given up trying to fatten up and have embraced my emaciated / little-boy figure! ;p

Like an Oldie

The reason for today's look was pretty simple. I had a heavy cold so I didn't want to get chilled by indoor air conditioning, but my body was a bit warmer than usual so I still needed a cover-up.

Voila! I put on a thin tank top (something I wouldn't wear by itself), a crocheted blouse, and layered on another light blouse.

Dressed for a Kill

I dressed to kill but ended up as road kill. I went for a simple, confidence-infusing choice of a light-blue, breezy button-up and pressed gray slacks for a meeting with a buyer.

This is me trying not to cry to smile after we were run over and told "Oh, we don't really need you. You need us. We're happy with what we have." Of course, being very professional, she said this expertly in a much nicer way but that was the message. We got it loud and clear.

I got what I wanted!

I've been mentioning how HOT it's been lately... I then woke up to a dark room on Tuesday and was tempted to let the sound of rain lull me back to sleep. BUT I had to go to work and I wanted to be at the office early for a change, so I jumped out of bed and into the shower, thinking of what to wear as I hummed along. I make it sound so important HAHA but I believe what you wear is a strong determinant of how you face the day... and that day, I'd like to be positive, upbeat, and most importantly, productive! :)

I selected my reliable purple dress from my clothes rack and just layered from there. This is probably one of the best dresses my mom bought for me. It's purple -- structured enough for work, dark enough for nighttime, soft enough that I forget it's not one of my loose sack dresses, and colored enough for some fun :)

I looped through a green short-haired belt to add dimension. Like most of my belts, it's meant to sit on my hips so I just knot it when I have it around my waist. This belt is one of my favorite buys in China. I <3 Chinese goods! So so cheap, and they're good enough quality if you're discerning enough. Surprised? Well... it does supply a huge amount of the selections in highstreet retailers like Topshop, H&M, and F21! China is just one big factory, and it's waiting for shopaholics to discover treasures in every nook and cranny!

Now let's proceed before I get too carried away with thoughts of shopping...

Here We Go Again...

I'm having a majorly corporate theme this week given the type of people I'll be meeting with and presenting to. But just because I have to look serious doesn't mean I have to give up my creative side.

And because I was too busy running around like a headless chicken during the day, I only managed to take a photo when I got home... which results in a not-so-good, poorly lighted photo. Sorry :(

Inspiration: Plaid + Floral

I take inspiration from everywhere, but one of my frequent and probably unsurprising sources would be Scott Schuman's street-style photos.

My younger self would be completely bewildered by this look, but now I find it so charming in a very nonchalant, just-got-dressed-in-the-dark-but-still-look-cute kind of way. I'm inspired to reinterpret this outfit with pieces from my own closet. I have similar alternatives for everything except the Prada heels. HAHA. I can try replicating them though!

Hmmm. Why not? One of these days, when it's a lot cooler, I'll put together my own version of this! C'mon, December chill, hurry up already :)

Summer White and Denim

We're already way into the -ber months yet I find the recent weather reminiscent of the summer -- scorching hot in the mornings and raining in the afternoon. And although we attended the earliest Sunday service yesterday, it was so warm that I decided on a white summer dress. Of course, I had to keep myself even warmer with a denim jacket ;p Go figure.

Well... I actually wanted to top the dress with a structured jacket, and a leather one would've suffocated me, so I ended up with this instead. Hmmm. Note to self while putting on the denim: add structured jacket in a lighter fabric on my shopping list ;)

The dress and jacket are two of my older pieces in my closet. I believe they're both circa 2003... My mom bought me this jacket when she and my aunt went to the US. The funny thing is, I have a whole collection of denim jackets in all lengths and cuts and I can count the times I've worn each on one hand. Well, the upside to being a pack rat is that 1) personal tastes change over time and 2) trends come and go, so nothing goes to waste*!

The Long and Short of It

I started my day at 5 am yesterday and prepared for the long day by printing my route from Google Maps the night before. I had to travel 13 km to Manila Ocean Park to check on a booth we set up for work. Praise God -- I didn't get lost! And I got to spend ample time with our customers at our booth.

Since I'd be at an outdoor event (read: hot), I allowed myself to wear shorts and decided to make a quick change for school later. Yahoo! I got to wear shorts on a Saturday ;) With the sun hitting my legs, it almost felt like I was at the beach! I use anything I can to keep happy, positive vibes, and wearing shorts = reminds me of the beach = happy place.

Unfortunately, these shorts were probably stained in the wash with a red shirt. See the discoloration? They're still my favorite though!

One hour later, I'm a little out of breath but happy to be productive so early in the morning! I made it in time for class. And since we have only a few weeks left in the Ateneo Rockwell campus, here I am hamming it up in front of its identifiable red brick wall.

In a Rush

I'm so glad I could squeeze in a Barre3 session before having dinner with some of my favorite girls Char and Bea!

Since my class pushed our dinner to a later time than what we're usually used to, I was initially planning to just change into a loose shirt and keep my yoga shorts on* to keep myself from meeting up with them too late. Thank GOD for giving me the wisdom to throw a dress into my exercise bag in the morning "just in case" I decide to make an effort... because the girls I had dinner with were so well-dressed! They even had matching curls and girly touches on their blouses -- ruffles and pleats on one, and colorful stripes on the other! I am liking this kikay-ness! :)

Oh, did I mention I was in slippers** for dinner? Afterwards, we decided to head back to Eastwood for some dessert with Dennis. I really couldn't bear the thought of my loose floral dress + rubber slippers + after-gym hair = washing woman look, so I changed into the heels I wore at the office.

Whew.

Methinks I look decent enough for public exposure and sharing the photo with a man(nequin). Happy weekend, everyone! :)

Dress from ukay-ukay. Vintage necklace, mom's. Sandals from Nine West.

----------
* Yes, this is my I-don't-care-for-appearances mode. I actually believe in thinking if I won't bump into anyone who knows me, I actually won't. This usually doesn't work, sad to say :p
** Rubber slippers! I really looked like... oh gosh. Like these girls' underpaid help. Hahaha!

Just One Thing

Here's one of my favorite examples on how just one accessory can turn the most boring, most basic outfit into a more special-looking one. My proof? I received so many comments on how dressed up I was today... and I believe it's only because of that shiny thing around my collar!

Now take a look at this and imagine what I'd look like without my necklace. It does make a huge difference, right? I would've looked so Blah!

Two men at the office told me I looked like a school girl. Hmmm. Do I?

My Name is Lola

I am truly blessed to have so much happening in my life lately. It's been very hectic at work but I've managed to exercise at least TWICE a week! For someone who usually exercises once a quarter, that's what I call a miracle! Haha... Oh, and it helps that I found something I enjoy doing despite having to sweat, and that's Barre3. Despite the body pain* after each session, I look forward to class and even think about it at work.

Okay, enough babbling like a crazy person!

Aside from exercise, I've been pushing myself to step out of my hermetic lifestyle for a moment, which means getting out of my usual 5-km radius. Here I am in Rockwell! Woohoo! Achievement!

What daring and youthfulness I put into getting myself out of bed on a sleepy afternoon and driving all 13 km out, I balanced by dressing in something very comfortable and grandma-ish (hence the title of this post).

Flora and Fauna

This is going to be a quick post of what I wore to school last week. The title's pretty self-explanatory.

Here's flora...

I went print-crazy again, as you can see... with what I consider one of my more expensive t-shirts I got from the US last year, and a chinoiserie jacket, which I consider one of my best-loved gifts (probably the cheapest too at P50! Can you believe it??)

Running Around in Black and White

Whew! It's already Monday and I don't think I've caught my breath just yet from the crazy day that was Friday.

I had five meetings, a meet-up, and an evening event (that's seven things on my calendar) all packed within a 13-hour time frame. Not to complain, but I think it's time for me to learn how to say no. Eep. Oh and learn to delegate and not procrastinate -- good habits do alleviate a lot of stress :)

Reflecting my headless-chicken-mess-of-a-brain state that day was a print-on-print ensemble.

I know, it's kind of crazy on the eyes, a fact that I realized only when I got home at 11 pm that night. Haha. I must have made a lot of people dizzy that day with my mental and physical state!

Easy Color

I have a lot of reasons to be upbeat, happy, joyful right now. Here are just three of them:
1) Work week started on a Wednesday! After a long weekend, there's certainly extra pressure on being productive, but I think I managed the week pretty well. Thank you, Lord, for helping me be so efficient!
2) After Saturday class, I spent a lovely two full days at the beach. There's nothing like doing nothing the sea to calm my nerves.
3) Work's been extra exciting* and there's really no time for me to sit still... as evidenced by my very wrinkly clothing**.

"When are we going shopping?"

I know what everyone's thinking. She went shopping AGAIN?

Why, yes I did... for a friend! I get all giddy when someone asks me to shop with/for them. "When are we going shopping?" is music to my ears. Doing what I love -- check! Doing what I love without spending my money -- check! So when a friend asked me to go shopping with him, I didn't mind that it was for work clothes. I just had to get my shopping fix!

I understand most guys are pretty easy and fast to shop with. This friend was too, but unlike the other guys I shopped for, he chose everything himself and rejected all my suggestions. I felt a bit useless after that so here's what I did to make myself productive...

And this...

Corporate Gypsy

The title of this post probably sounds a little like a contrived Halloween costume, but it's what I feel inspired by on most days. Although lacking the curvy va-voom factor of Disney's gypsy Esmeralda, I feel relaxed and comfortable in a loose top, a long, flowy skirt, a few accessories -- not too much so as would restrict (ahem) work -- and flats. Of course, working in a proper office* necessitates the need to be modest, so my selection of cardigans comes in quite handy.

There's nothing like tiered ruffles and a multi-strand necklace to distract from a bony chest. I say, the more frou-frou to distract / add volume, the better! ;)

Dalagang Bukid and Other Musings

I'm perfectly aware I put down "crocheted cardigans" on my Do Not Buy list, and thought long and hard about this cover-up right here before buying this one right here... There were so many crocheted tops in all lengths and designs in Maple when I last visited in August that I probably went a little loopy. Finally, I decided on this one right here because I thought it was the piece that I can use with the most number of outfits and occasions.

Oh and even with my amateur knowledge of fashion, I reasoned out that this was definitely NOT a cardigan. Haha. As my Ateneo professor would say, there is no such thing as a rational decision; everything we decide is tainted with emotion from the limbic brain. I agree completely!

Last week, I paired the traditional lace top with something equally feminine -- a loud floral skirt which my sister-from-another-mister Abby and I bought in Germany. It's been five years since and it's still one of my favorite pieces!

Year 2006, Exhibit A: Abby and I galavanting on the side streets of Germany! Please note, the dalagang bukid attire was inspired by the surrounding fields which we saw day after day.

I wore my skirt as a tube dress while Abby wore hers with the waistband over one shoulder. It produced a flowy kimono-like sleeve when belted.
