Styletag x Parsons Challenge Winners Announced!

I had been in New York for barely a month in January when I heard about the Styletag x Parsons Challenge in school. Styletag is a fashion-sharing app that "brings together expert curated and crowd-sourced photos of fashion trends and designer styles." To celebrate Fashion Week, the company challenged students from Parsons to capture original photos of trends not from the runway, but on the street. More about the contest details here.

In May, Styletag announced the winners, and I was thrilled to win first prize for the Womenswear category. The below image with accompanying text is just one of dozens that I uploaded for the contest.

Old Soul, Bold Choices

Not so long ago, I wouldn't have considered pairing a pink-and-brown patterned coat with black-and-white snakeskin flats. The fearful, insecure me would have balked at such a long coat and the masculine shoe shape. (In fact, I had second thoughts when I was about to get each.) But life in a new city tends to make one see things in a whole new light. It has allowed me to be braver, bolder, stronger, more curious, and more daring.

Sometimes, I still appreciate receiving someone's approval of the choices I make. And yes, it feels wonderful when strangers come up and compliment me on my coat or shoes (I am surprised every time!) Whenever I am given to insecurity, God reminds me to fix my thoughts on Him, not on anyone else's. 1 Corinthians 10:5 says "we demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."

With this, I look forward to exploring more options -- not just with clothes but with my way of thinking and pursuing life!

Updates!!! And a Tradeshow and a Mani

Okay, so I haven't been blogging lately, and rather than wait until I have a huuuuuuge amount of time (which may be never) for me to catch you up on my updates since December, I figured I'd just jump right back in and talk about what I did today.

So... what's new since I last posted? LOTS. Let's see where I'll start...
1) I'm currently living in Manhattan as a student at Parsons the New School. <3 What an amazing, amazing blessing!
2) During my first month in the US, I was living in Jersey City and moved to Manhattan after my first week of school so that was a busy time for me.
3) The first three weeks of school has been crazy, and the amount of work staggering, but I do enjoy meeting and learning from my professors and classmates. I think it was the second or third day of school when I had the big revelation that I came to the right school -- what a huge relief after months of seesawing back and forth and paralyzing analysis. It reminds me of some eight years ago when I couldn't accept I was in Ateneo de Manila until one day, I looked in the mirror and saw an Atenista. Haha.
4) My learning curve ever since I arrived has been steep, and I am loving every moment of it -- okay, maybe not this week when I lost my brand new phone :( -- not just with regards to the fashion industry, but about myself too -- what I like and don't like, what I'm willing to live without (dining table) and what I absolutely need (decent bed). The biggest challenge I've been slowly getting over is learning to let go of my Plan A when it doesn't work out and accepting Plan B or C or D as fast as my brain and emotions can manage.

I don't have a lot of photos since they were pretty much on my phone, but I'll post today's events. A friend and I went to Soho to do research for our class, after which we headed to a trade show in Lower East Side called Capsule.

It was filled with local designers and I was surprised that I spent most of the time looking at jewelry instead of clothes. We especially liked these from Phyllis+Rose Jewelry.

I fell in love with these bangles in rose gold, silver, and yellow gold. They looked so organic, so raw yet luxurious and you can wear a single one or a couple in mixed metals. I wanted to buy a whole bunch right there!!!

After walking around and talking to several designers, we spotted a manicure booth in the middle of the show. Who could pass up a FREE manicure in Manhattan? Not us! ;p

Arden chose a cool speckled design against white.

I think it went perfectly with her look.

The weather was soooooo gorgeous outside that we had to take photos of the skyline before we headed home. It was a warm 11 degrees Celsius (I never thought I'd say 11 degrees is warm!) compared to the freezing month we had.

Field work, Mexican lunch, trade show, manicure. We got a lot done today! And now, homework ;)

Bensimon Manila, With Love From Paris

I'm not the usual sneaker type of person. I've been thinking of getting new ones, but I'm very picky with which ones to get because I still wanted to look more Parisian laid-back chic and less skater boy. So on the day French sneaker brand Bensimon invited a couple of stylists and bloggers over for its launch, I got excited about getting a new pair and thought I'd wear something youthful (what's more young-at-heart than a crop top?) and feminine (what's more girly than a voluminous skirt?) just to make sure I won't look like Avril Lavigne during her Skater Boi days*.

This Home is Temporary

I haven't been posting updates as much as I should lately, because I've been busy preparing for something big... and I didn't want to talk about it until it's becoming really real (as in, not just in my head.) I'm going to New York next year!!!! :) I'll give more details about this in a separate post.

Now that I've gotten my visa -- yet another miraculous story waiting to be told -- my trip is all becoming a concrete reality. Yes, even after months of other people accepting that I'm going away and being very excited for me, I've just recently come to terms with it. So I finally contacted the broker my friend recommended me months ago and I told him what I was looking for. I was sitting on the floor of my walk-in closet (funnily, WiFi is limited to this area in my room), looking for apartments online when the realization hit me hard: my NY quarters -- bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and all -- will most likely be smaller than my current bedroom. Gasp. How spoiled of me, huh? What prompted this thought was counting all my blessings...

KC Concepcion for Axis Watches

It's pretty exciting to see one's work up in a billboard, even if it's... hmmm small compared to the humongous ones beside it. Was driving from home the other day -- in slow traffic -- and captured the work we did with KC Concepcion for Axis watches.

Hope you're having a great week!

Walking and Sewing and Praying

I know it's not a big deal to walk -- like, duh, people commute all the time -- but I've been so used to sitting a lot the past few weeks (in traffic too!) that I decided to take the physical and visual route to sewing class. I parked in SM Megamall, which was two blocks away.

Ten steps out of my car, I thought to myself, why on earth is my bag soooo heavy? Well, I better get used to walking and carrying loads of stuff as I prepare for a very exciting 2014! Thank you, Lord, for legs that can move and eyes that can see your goodness! These days, I keep on pushing myself to do things that are inconvenient or uncomfortable for me so I can move forward and upward. And yes, I talk to myself a LOT ;)
